DAY 78 ~ 12/1/21
I walked in honor of Rick Stevens today. And for his family. He died from Covid-19 yesterday. He was a neighbor of mine, a friend and a board member of our association who I served with for many years. He was there on September 15th for my sendoff. I remember looking in his eyes, hugging him and holding his hands as I told him how much it meant to me that he was there to support me. I'm so glad my last encounter with him was precious!
Joan and I walked a total of 13.3 miles today, all on US 79 South. Walking the several miles in Henderson to start our day was really tricky as there were 6 lanes of traffic and absolutely no shoulder, and definitely no sidewalk, to walk on. Fortunately there were many business parking lots which provided our path, but when we needed to be on the road everyone moved over for us. Once we were out of the city limits the shoulder was flat and really wide which made the rest of today’s walk much easier.
Another day on a major highway brought no interactions. We did see some cows, sheep and dogs, but all at a distance.
We had another adventure with the RV. Joan had some things Fed Ex’d to the campground we were staying at but they didn’t have an office so she didn’t want the package to sit out by a mailbox. She instead had it held at the facility Fed Ex designated which was a Dollar General. We drove into their parking lot just fine, but on the way out the front bumper bottomed out, making a loud scraping noise. The RV wouldn’t budge in drive so Clarence backed up, which repeated the scraping sound. He said I’ll have to try it at an angel. That repeated the bumper bottoming out. To get out, he had to go back in the parking lot, turn around and back out onto the highway! Thankfully that worked!
We all hadn’t eaten at a Whataburger before so that’s what we did tonight for dinner. It was really good. Huge burgers!
I can’t believe it’s already December. We’re in the final 30 days, the last month, and the fifth state which is home to our destination. This last stretch is going to go by fast!!
