DAY 71 ~ 11/24/21

We walked a total of 14.2 miles today, all on US 59 South. It was a busy four-lane highway with tons of trucks. Thank goodness it had a big shoulder, and double thank goodness that the shoulder was mostly flat. There were hills but seemed manageable. We walked across the Sulfer River. It was beautiful. We also navigated some crazy on/off ramps and interchanges.

I didn’t think I would have many opportunities for pictures today, but there were two almost right off the bat. When I told Joan I can’t believe I already have two pictures, she asked if I got any pictures yesterday? I said yeah I got almost an hours worth in front of Texas border signs. We both laughed and laughed. She was thinking of yesterday afternoon‘s walk which was all on the same highway with no opportunity for pictures. So funny!

Last night when I was falling asleep I made a decision to try my walking sticks today. They were recommended to me by experts, neighbors and good friends. I haven’t used them yet because I like my hands-free to be able to take pictures and grab my water whenever I want. I am so grateful to report that they made a world of difference! I still feel my sore heel but it’s amazingly better. I will be using my walking sticks for the remainder of the trip, that’s for sure!

A good friend from home (Kate Anderson) texted me a picture today from her walk and then wrote “Greetings from Schmeekle Lake”. The bench by the lake reads “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” It is perfect!! I will cross the 1,000 mile mark Friday morning!!!

We plan on walking tomorrow on Thanksgiving Day. We are planning a mini Turkey dinner with mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. I’m grateful for my family away from home, Clarence, Joan and Bella. None of this would be possible without them. I’m also thankful for my family at home. Paige, Ruben and Oliver. Miss them so much!! To all other family, friends and followers, I’m grateful for your support and love. Happy Thanksgiving!
